Cultural Visit

The Palace of Galiana is located on the banks of the Tagus river and has privileged views of the city of Toledo.  This ancient almunia or leasure palace, was built in the 11th Century by the Muslim King of Toledo, Al Mamun.  Since the 16th Century it has received its present name in memory of the fabulous palaces and gardens that Galiana, beautiful legendary daughter of the Muslim king Galafre and wife of Emperor Charlemagne, who inhabited this beautiful place.

During the siege of Toledo by the Almoravids in the first half of the 12th Century, the palace suffered much damage.  It was probably rebuilt under King Alfonso the 10th, known as "the Wise", who received in Galiana in the year 1254 the first Nazrid monarch of Granada, Muhammad I.

Galiana subsequently passed from one monarch to another until in the 14th Century when it was granted to the brotherhood of Santa Lucía, and then to the monks of Saint Jerome.  The monks sold the property to Doña Beatriz de Silva, an illustrious Portuguese lady resident in Toledo, married to Alvar Perez de Guzmán, whose coats-of-arms are displayed on the palace columns.

In the second half of the 19th Century the Empress Eugene of Montijo, wife of Napoleon III, owned the palace. In the year 1959 her heirs sold it to Alejandro Fernández de Araoz and his wife Carmen Marañón, who carried out an admirable restoration of the property under the direction of the architect Fernando Chueca Goitia and the art historian Manuel Gomez-Moreno, returning Galiana to its previous splendor.

The palace of Galiana consists of a rectangular floor plan divided into nine vaulted rooms and a sunken pond that reflects the magnificent architecture.  It is surrounded by a wonderful garden.
